Well, I was reading this article by Markram in Nature today. He opened
with the setence, industrialization hit the biological sciences near the
turn of 21st century. I think this whole enterprise will look very different
in 10- 20 years.
So China could indeed take the labor intensive biology idea and run
with it.
I predict that all labor intensive biology will be outsourced to China
in 20 years just like manufacturing jobs are outsourced to China now.
High throughput experiments will generate the leads and follow-up
experiments using human labor will be done in China on a massive
scale. I mean, what keeps current biology expensive, namely all those patents
etc will expire soon. Reagents will be cheap and humans will be expensive.
So the key is to build the infrastructure companies in China now to
supply those reagents etc. That will be where I put my money. That's my bold
prediction. :)
